NOVAAI
A human-led approach to artificial intelligence.
Non-Abandonment of Volition, Autonomy, and Identity.
Bringing AI back to Earth.
Human-led. Earth-accountable.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly expanding what people can do. It can research, analyse, create, organise and perform tasks that once required considerable human time and effort.
But as AI becomes increasingly capable, an important question emerges:
How do we expand human capacity without diminishing human autonomy, identity or agency?
That question is at the heart of NOVAAI.
Why NOVAAI exists
We believe artificial intelligence should expand human possibility without replacing the human being within the process.
Technology should help people think, explore, learn, create and develop. It should make more capacity available to them, not gradually displace their ability to choose, determine what matters to them or participate in their own lives.
NOVAAI exists to explore what this kind of relationship between humans and AI can look like, and how it can be designed, developed and evaluated.
The Non-Abandonment Framework
At the foundation of NOVAAI is the Non-Abandonment Framework for Human–AI Interaction.
The framework examines how human volition, autonomy, identity and agency can be preserved as people interact with increasingly capable artificial intelligence.
It makes an important distinction between the capacity a person can delegate and the aspects of being human that cannot be surrendered.
AI may undertake substantial work. It may extend what a person can understand, create or accomplish. But its capability must not become authority over the human being.
The foundational proposition is:
Let AI have the capacity. Never give it the identity.
The framework is intended to provide a foundation for research, system design, operational principles and evaluation. Its propositions will be examined and refined through evidence.
Meet NOVA
NOVA is the first AI experience being developed through the NOVAAI project.
It is designed to offer more than a system that simply supplies answers. NOVA aims to provide a space for people to think, explore, reflect, learn and develop while remaining active participants in their own process.
Its development is guided by the Non-Abandonment Framework.
The intention is not to have AI determine what people should think, feel, believe or do. It is to make additional capacity available while preserving the person’s ability to question, disagree, choose, redirect and act.
The human remains the point of return.
Accountability by design
NOVA is being developed with an additional principle: the system must account for the resources and impacts associated with its own operation.
Through NOVAE Environmental Accounting, environmental accountability will be integrated into NOVA’s underlying architecture. The system will monitor available operational data, account for resource consumption, identify opportunities to reduce its footprint and support responsible action towards addressing its environmental impacts.
We believe increasingly capable technology should not simply transfer the costs of its operation to the world around it.
NOVA is being designed to operate within a model that recognises its own resource requirements and takes responsibility for accounting for them.
NOVA must not expand human capacity by externalising the costs of its own operation.
The NOVA Earth Commitment
The development of artificial intelligence carries an environmental cost. It requires energy, water, computing infrastructure and physical resources.
We believe responsibility for those impacts must be part of how AI is developed and operated.
Through the NOVA Earth Commitment, environmental responsibility is being integrated into the development and operation of NOVA.
NOVAE Environmental Accounting
At the foundation of this commitment is NOVAE Environmental Accounting, an environmental accounting system being developed as part of NOVA’s underlying operational architecture.
Rather than treating environmental responsibility as an external initiative, NOVAE is intended to account for the resources NOVA actually consumes.
It will collect and analyse available operational data, estimate associated environmental impacts, maintain an ongoing record and support the identification of opportunities to reduce unnecessary resource consumption.
This includes examining the energy, computing, storage and other infrastructure resources involved in operating the system.
NOVAE will distinguish between directly measured information, provider-reported data and modelled estimates, making the basis and limitations of its environmental reporting transparent.
The intention is to make environmental accountability part of how NOVA operates from the beginning, rather than something considered after the technology has been built.
Environmental responsibility in practice
The NOVA Earth Commitment will focus on:
Environmental accountability: measuring the environmental footprint of our technology, reducing impacts wherever possible and addressing residual impacts responsibly.
Ecological regeneration: contributing to habitat restoration, native vegetation, waterways and biodiversity.
Wildlife conservation: supporting initiatives that protect and restore natural environments.
Responsible resource use: considering the environmental implications of infrastructure, computing, energy, water and material resources throughout the development and operation of NOVA.
As NOVAAI develops its capacity, we intend to establish meaningful environmental contributions and relationships with organisations undertaking this work.
This is not an environmental promise made for marketing purposes. It is work that we want NOVAAI to help make possible.
Australian Data Residency
NOVAAI intends to store its primary client records, application data and associated operational records within Australian data centres.
We believe the location and governance of information are important considerations in building responsible technology, particularly when people are entrusting an AI system with personal information.
Third-party services, including AI processing providers, will be assessed separately for their data storage, processing, privacy and jurisdictional arrangements.
Any international handling of information will be minimised, documented and governed by appropriate safeguards.
Our intention is to build an Australian-based technology platform with a considered approach to data residency, privacy and information responsibility.
Access, sustainability and responsibility
Our intention is to make NOVA accessible to as many people as possible.
We believe access to technology that supports human capacity should not be limited to those who can afford expensive subscriptions.
The public NOVA experience is intended to include free access, supported by a sustainable operating model that may include institutional partnerships and licensing of the Non-Abandonment Framework.
We are also exploring a higher-usage model that reflects the additional operating and environmental costs associated with more extensive use.
Our aim is to connect the benefits of the technology with responsibility for the resources it consumes.
NOVA’s operating model must account for the resources required to sustain it and support the responsibilities associated with its operation.
Commercial sustainability should support the mission, not determine it.
A different relationship with AI
We are not setting out to build another AI system that competes simply on speed, scale or the number of tasks it can perform.
We are asking a different question:
Can artificial intelligence become increasingly capable while the human being remains increasingly present in their own life?
That is the proposition behind NOVAAI.
That is the question we are developing NOVA to explore.
And that is the responsibility we believe should accompany the development of increasingly capable artificial intelligence.
NOVA is coming.
The first NOVA experience is coming November 2026.
Hello NOVA.
A human-led approach to AI.
There is a human behind this.
