THE HELICAL HEALING METHOD®

The Helical Healing Method® is a conceptual framework for understanding human healing, development and integration.

It begins from a simple observation:

We can return to familiar territory without being back where we began.

Human change does not require us to leave the past permanently behind. Nor does encountering something familiar necessarily mean that change has failed.

We return.

But the person returning may have changed.

Identity may have changed. Capacity may have changed. The conditions around us may have changed. Sometimes those differences are obvious. Sometimes we only recognise them when familiar circumstances allow us to encounter ourselves again.

This is why the method describes healing as helical.

A helix allows us to represent two things at once: recurrence and changed position.

The Helical Healing Method does not prescribe how a person should heal.

It offers a way of observing what may already be changing.

A Conceptual Model, Not a Technique

The Helical Healing Method is not a treatment protocol, therapeutic modality or step-by-step process.

It is an orientation — a way of seeing human change that helps make sense of why:

  • familiar experiences can return without representing regression

  • insight and integration do not necessarily occur at the same time

  • different dimensions of a person can develop at different rates

  • meaningful change may become visible only when something familiar is encountered again

The helix does not assume that every return represents progress.

A person may return with greater capacity, reduced capacity, a changed understanding of themselves, different circumstances or new limitations.

Return provides information.

It gives us another opportunity to observe what is available now.

What the Helix Describes

The helix offers a visual and conceptual map for understanding change across many areas of human experience, including:

  • identity

  • embodied experience

  • emotional patterns

  • relationships

  • behaviour

  • learning and development

  • inherited and repeated patterns

The important distinction is not simply whether something has happened before.

It is whether the person meeting it is developmentally positioned in exactly the same way.

This is what separates recurrence from repetition.

We may recognise the landscape.

We are not necessarily meeting it as the same person.

Why Structure Matters

Many approaches to change understandably focus on what can be altered:

symptoms to address

narratives to reconsider

behaviours to change

capacities to develop

The Helical Healing Method asks another question:

What is happening in the relationship between the person and what they are encountering?

That shift matters because human development is not one-dimensional.

What we understand about ourselves and what we currently have the capacity to do do not necessarily change together.

Nor does development always announce itself when it happens.

Sometimes it becomes visible only later, through Return:

I met that differently.

Something was available to me this time.

I noticed something I could not notice before.

The helix gives us a structure through which those differences can be observed without requiring every familiar experience to be interpreted as failure.

An Orientation, Not a Destination

The Helical Healing Method does not ask people to become “healed,” “regulated” or “complete.”

There is no final position on the helix at which human development is finished.

Instead, the model offers a way to remain oriented within continuing change.

We develop.

We encounter.

We return.

We recognise.

And what becomes visible through that process can change how we participate in what happens next.

This is the foundation from which the wider architecture of the Helical Healing Method develops — including the Autonomy Helix, the Developmental Helix and their relationship within the Dual Helix of Healing.

Healing is helical. We rise by returning.
